The single most important risk to stock market investors

It may sound obvious. But when you invest in stocks, you're at risk of getting wiped out. That really is the single most important risk to investors. Even when you think you're well-diversified, you could see the value of your investments quickly plunge or perhaps slowly bleed 90% of its value over years as the Greek stock market did during the eurozone crisis. Citi's Jonathan Stubbs addresses this in a recent research note about asset allocation. He included a chart highlighting some of the ugliest maximum drawdowns of in the global stock market. "Figure 45 shows various markets and industries which have suffered severe losses in relatively short order in recent decades, e.g., the UK (1972-74), the Nasdaq (2000-03), Greece (2008-12) and Mining (2008-09)," he writes. "Hence, buyer beware." Because many of these stocks are of companies that don't go bankrupt, the losses are just paper losses that you don't realize until you sell. If you have a long investment time horizon, you might think it wise to wait for the value to come back. However, an investor must be willing to be extraordinarily patient if he hopes to recoup his losses. "It can sometimes take many years for investors to make their money back after suffering big losses," Stubbs writes. "For example, US equities only made it back to the peak 1929 total return levels in 1945, more than 15 years after the Great Crash. Kenji Abe, Citi’s Japanese strategist, highlights that Japanese equities are still a long way short of end-1989 peak levels." These are all things investors need to consider very carefully before they commit their life savings to the stock market.SEE ALSO: This Crazy Chart Perfectly Illustrates Why You Should Never Expect 'Average' Returns Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: Nationwide's Super Bowl commercial about dead children is about corporate profits ... in a way that we can all appreciate

European stocks are flashing a 'full house buy signal' for the first time since 2009

After a terrible day on Monday, with stocks going through the floor, there's something far better on the horizon for European equities, at least according to some analysts.   Morgan Stanley's Graham Secker and Matthew Garman say that their market timing indicators are flashing a "full-house buy signal" for European equities for the first time since 2009, and only the 6th time in the last 25 years. That's a solid sign to them that markets will be higher in three months' time. This is their explanation:  We do not believe that the ongoing economic weakness in EM and China will significantly drag down the European economy. Consequently, we feel that the current volatility in equity markets is likely to be temporary rather than the start of a long and painful bear market. While markets may stay volatile in the short-term, we believe that MSCI Europe will be higher in 3m time and recommend investors ultimately use this opportunity to add exposure to European equities. Here's how it looks: There are five elements that Morgan Stanley uses to decide when something is a "full-house," as they explain in their note: Three of our Market Timing Indicators (CMTI, Risk and Fundamentals) had been giving a buy signal since the height of Greek worries in early July, but given that last week Europe was down over 6%, both our Composite Valuation Indicator and our Capitulation Indicators (which measures price momentum and market breadth), both moved below their traditional buy thresholds. This meant that as of Friday all five of our Market Timing Indicators fell into buy territory at the same time, a so called “Full-House Buy Signal”. That means that even during the major rally in European equities earlier this year, the market timing didn't look this good. What's more, the only previous buy signal that hasn't taken place during a recession or bear market was in 1998 — in that case stocks were higher 3, 6 and 12 months after the signal was recorded.Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: The rich and powerful are going crazy over these luxury SUVs with bathrooms and cable TV

UNICEF Sets up Support Area for Migrant Children in Macedonia

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Tuesday it has established a child-friendly space with a mobile team near the Macedonian town of Geveglija to provide support to migrant women and children transiting the country. The child-friendly space, which can support about 50 children at one time, has been established within the compounds of the migrant rest area created by UNHCR at the town, which lies at Macedonia’s southern border with Greece, UNICEF said in a news release. Over the last month the daily rate of migrants transiting through Macedonia has increased to 1,500-2,000, of which about a third are women and children, UNICEF said. The migrants, most of them refugees fleeing war in Syria, arrive from from Greece and transit Macedonia en route to Serbia and Hungary.  “At greatest risk are migrant children travelling alone without parents or adult family members,” the UN Children’s Fund said. Up to 3,000 migrants are expected to cross into Macedonia every day in the coming months, the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, said on Tuesday.

The bullfighter activist was a woman breaking up a male fantasy

A female protester who jumped into a bullring to comfort a dying animal was an intruder into the masculine world of blood lust and glorified violenceShe bends down to comfort the dying bull. She holds its horns in a loving and tender farewell to a creature slaughtered for sport. As the matador in his finery looks on helplessly at his moment of triumph being spoiled, officials try to pull animal rights activist Virginia Ruiz away from the beast to whom she brings solidarity and compassion. Did the beast know? Did this moment of mercy make a difference to it? And how long can Spain keep using bulls as sacrificial victims in archaic sports and festivals? This dramatic protest in the bullring was one more incident during a summer of no fewer than 10 fatalities in the bull-running events that are popular in many Spanish towns. Bulls have been mythified in many cultures since the stone age. They appear in cave paintings as potent, supernatural horned beings. During the Minoan civilisation in Crete, young men leaped over bulls as part of a game that may also have been a religious ritual. This Minoan obsession with bulls is remembered in the Greek myth of the Minotaur, the half-bull, half-human monster that lived beneath the royal palace. Continue reading...

Jamie Dimon's bank is earning comparisons to the best player in the NBA (JPM)

One is the picture of offensive prowess and defensive aggression, wrapped up into an All-Star package that some think is the best in the game. The other is LeBron James.  CSLA analyst Mike Mayo has issued a bullish report upgrading JPMorgan to a buy and comparing chief executive Jamie Dimon to four-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player LeBron James.  Mayo's note, published Tuesday August 25, puts a $78 price target on JPMorgan, a jump above the current share price of around $63. Mayo told Business Insider: "This is certainly the first time we’ve had an all-out buy on a Jamie Dimon bank in one, if not two, decades." He added: "This is a big deal, right? This is a big upgrade. They are the number one kind of global, universal bank, right? They are the Lebron James of global universal banks." The call is based on strong defence in addition to powerful offense, according to Mayo, who highlighted JPMorgan's dividend yield. It is 2.9% this year and expected to jump to 3.4% in 2017.  Mayo told Business Insider: "Lebron has been named to the all-NBA team for defense. So we wanted some defensive characteristics and JPMorgan has perhaps the most resilient balance sheet that it’s had under Jamie Dimon." Not to mention higher capital, good credit quality, and the strong dividend yield. Then there is the offense.  Mayo said: "JP Morgan has offense with their strong market positions, and also with the tailwind from expense savings of $4.8 billion over a couple years. And don’t forget that they try to win when others lose, so if there is some sort of dislocation in Asia, this is the opportunity for JPMorgan to gain market share in Asia." Banks' stocks have taken a beating with the broader market over the last few days. Most Wall Street firms — JPMorgan included — saw their stocks go negative on the year in trading Monday August 24.  JPMorgan saw shares rise about 4% in trading early Tuesday August 25. Mayo notes the company is trading at 1.3 times its tangible book value, compared to a 1.6X-multiple historically.  Mayo's comparisons between James and JPMorgan come, curiously enough, one day after reports that the NBA star's family foundation is partnering with Dimon's bank to better track the academic progress of the students it supports.SEE ALSO: This is what a day in the life of a JPMorgan intern is like Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: 6 mind-blowing facts about Greece's economy

There are 2 big problems with blaming China for the stock market sell-off (DIA, SPX, SPY, QQQ, TLT, IWM)

There's been chaos in global markets.  Stocks fell more than 3% in the US on Monday, a decline that followed a 3% sell-off to end last week.  But on Tuesday morning, stocks were ripping higher, a move being largely attributed to the People's Bank of China's decision to cut rates.  And so while the consensus is sort of coalescing around the idea that the latest moves in the stock market — both up and down — have to do with China, Deutsche Bank's Torsten Sløk circulated an email on Tuesday morning questioning the logic behind this reason.  "I have two problems with the ongoing global stock market sell-off," Sløk wrote. Sløk added: 1) Betting against China has been a losing proposition for decades, why should now be different? 2) Despite this being a client conversation for several months, I still haven't seen a smoking gun chart showing why a slowdown in China will have a significant impact on the US expansion. If you have one then please send it along. Sløk included the following chart, showing spikes in the VVIX — which measures volatility of the VIX index, which measures expected volatility in the stock market — during the Lehman event of 2008 and the Greece crisis of 2011, among other big events.  Is this really the same sort of problem? Not to Sløk, who writes: "As a result, I conclude the following: When uncertainty about corporate America reaches an all-time high – see chart below – because of "something in China" then it looks like a buying opportunity to me; wait for your 5-day moving average to stabilize and it will likely be a good entry point." Death boats, cuts, tear gas mark path for migrants to Europe

By Marton Dunai ROSZKE, Hungary (Reuters) - Hassan, a 30-year old IT engineer from Syria, was still shaken from having been forced by smugglers to drive an overloaded boat full of fellow migrants to Greece from Turkey. Standing in a queue for a bus inside Hungary, he had his young nephew on his back, the boy's head bandaged after being cut by razor wire as he and his family tried to cross into the visa-free part of the European Union from Serbia. The three-year-old had stood up as they crawled through a triple-cylinder razor wire erected by Hungary on its southern border to try to keep out the streams of migrants trying to reach western Europe.
