Greek Police: Dead Suspect Linked to Sensational Paleokostas Prison Break

In a sensational new turn in the case, police on Saturday reported that the suspect killed during a counter-terrorism operation at Nea Aghialos in Volos was none other than the pilot of the helicopter in which notorious criminal Vassilis Paleokostas had in 2006 escaped from Korydallos Prison in Athens, Greece . During the preliminary inquiry conducted by the counter-terrorism squad, the dead man was positively identified as 34-year-old Spiros Dravilas, also known by the nickname ‘Karfakias,’ who was also implicated in an armed robbery carried out in Distomo last August. Police arrested two individuals during Friday’s operation, 44-year-old Spiros Christodoulou and 37-year-old Grigoris Tsironis. The latter arrest was considered especially fortunate, since Tsironis has been wanted for years as one of the ‘robbers in black’ that worked with the brothers Marios and Simos Seisidis. Along with the brothers, police had offered a 600,000-euro reward for Tsironis after an attack on the Agia Paraskevi police station using Kalashnikov rifles. According to information given by authorities, four shots were heard from within the house during the police operation at Aghialos, before police had entered. The two suspects in custody then surrendered, claiming that the third suspect shot himself to avoid arrest. Tsironis initially identified himself as Spiros Dravilas, causing confusion concerning the identity of the dead man. This was later definitively settled when the dead man’s finger prints revealed his true identity. The two men under arrest are to be led before a public prosecutor on Saturday afternoon. In a press conference, Chief of Police Dimitris Tsaknakis confirmed that Dravilas committed suicide, shooting himself in the head after he realized the police had surrounded the house in Nea Aghialos. The police operation was mounted after the counter-terrorism squad uncovered information indicating that Vassilis Paleokostas may be involved in two serious armed robberies recently carried out in Thessaly. Police said that the dead man, Dravilas, and 45-year-old Spiros Christodoulou were both at the Distomo robbery in August with Giorgos Petrakakos, who is wanted and still at large. The three were uncovered after authorities spotted Dravilas driving a Nissan truck that had earlier been used in an armed robbery in Ambelonas, Larissa outside a supermarket in Volos. Police set up a surveillance operation, followed the truck back to the house in Nea Aghialos and soon after decided to move in. A search of the house has revealed additional evidence, such as fire arms, ammunition and three stolen cars. All three men are believed to have participated in a robbery at Farkadona, Trikala on April 2 and the robbery in Ambelonas, Larissa on April 30. Asked whether any of the three are linked to terrorism in any way, Tsaknakis said there was no evidence to confirm this, apart from the fact that convicted terrorist Nikos Maziotis had taken part in robberies committed by the gang in the past. Greek Health Ministry Considers Time Schedule for Public Smoking

Unable to ban smoking in public places, the Greek government is considering to implement a measure according to which indoor smoking will be allowed at certain hours. Greeks stubbornly refuse to comply with European Union directives that prohibit smoking indoors in public places. Since smoking is tied with social activities such as eating and drinking, it is next to impossible for restaurants, coffee shops and bars to not allow patrons to smoke. “No Smoking” signs in such places are only for show. Health ministry officials have put on the drawing table a plan to implement “smoking hours” in restaurants, bars and coffee shops, according to Mega television report. The plan is to allow smoking only for certain hours. General Secretary of Public Health Yiannis Baskozos said on television that according to his experience, in other European countries there are certain hours when smoking is allowed, and others when smoking is prohibited. “I have seen in Berlin that smoking in restaurants and bars was forbidden completely for three hours, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm for example. I’m not saying that this is the solution, but it is an idea,” Baskozos said. According to the Hellenic Cardiological Society, 51.2 percent of Greek men and 25.7 percent of women are smokers. Age-wise, 64.2 percent of men in the 25-44 age bracket smoke, while the percentage for women in the same age bracket is 37. The same survey on second-hand smoke show that 25-30 percent of passive smokers are at risk of dying from coronary heart disease, while the likelihood of stroke and ischemic myocardial disease increases dramatically.

Greece Willing to Make Concessions to Secure Agreement

The Greek government is willing to make concessions by pushing back its anti-austerity program in order to secure an agreement with creditors, Greece’s interior minister said. As loan repayments loom large and state coffers are emptying at an alarming rate, the Greek government is prepared to cross the so-called red lines it had set on negotiations. The red lines refer to pension and labor market reforms and tax laws. Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis said on Greek television on Saturday that he is confident the government will reach a deal with lenders next week. “We believe that we can and we must have a solution and a deal within the week,” Voutsis said. “Some parts of our program could be pushed back by six months or maybe a year, so that there is some balance,” he added. Voutsis said Athens and European partners have agreed on some issues, such as achieving low primary budget surpluses in the first two years. But they still disagreed on value added tax rates, with Greece pushing so any VAT hikes will not burden lower incomes. The interior minister also said that in political negotiations European partners have agreed that further austerity measures will be counter-productive. “A powerful majority in the political negotiations have shown respect for the fact that there can’t be further austerity strategies for the Greek issue, the Greek problem and the Greek people,” Voutsis said.

More Than 4,200 Migrants Rescued In Mediterranean

By Gavin Jones ROME, May 30 (Reuters) - More than 4,200 migrants trying to reach Europe have been rescued from boats in the Mediterranean in last 24 hours, the Italian coastguard said on Saturday. In some of the most intense Mediterranean migrant traffic of the year, a total of 4,243 people have been saved from fishing boats and rubber dinghies in 22 operations involving ships from nations including Italy, Ireland, Germany, Belgium and Britain. On Friday the Italian navy said 17 dead bodies had been found on one of the boats off Libya. Details of the nationalities of the victims and how they died have not yet been released. The bodies and more than 200 survivors will be brought to the port of Augusta in eastern Sicily aboard the Italian navy corvette Fenice later on Saturday, the coastguard said. Migrants escaping war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East this year have been pouring into Italy, which has been bearing the brunt of Mediterranean rescue operations. Most depart from the coast of Libya, which has descended into anarchy since Western powers backed a 2011 revolt that ousted Muammar Gaddafi. Calm seas are increasingly favoring departures as warm spring weather sets in. In this April 20, 2015, file photo, a coast guard officer looks at the wreckage of a boat which was carrying dozens of migrants in the eastern Aegean island of Rhodes, Greece. (AP Photo/Nikolas Nanev, File) Last month around 800 migrants drowned off Libya in the Mediterranean's most deadly shipwreck in living memory when their 20-meter long fishing boat capsized and sank. That spurred the European Union to agree on a naval mission to target gangs smuggling migrants from Libya, but a broader plan to deal with the influx is in doubt due to a dispute over national quotas for housing asylum seekers. The EU plan to disperse 40,000 migrants from Italy and Greece to other countries met with resistance this week, with Britain saying it would not participate and some eastern countries calling for a voluntary scheme. Around 35,500 migrants arrived in Italy from the beginning of the year up to the first week of May, the UN refugee agency estimated, a number which has swelled considerably since. About 1,800 are either dead or missing. Most of those rescued on Friday and Saturday are expected to reach ports around southern Italy during the weekend. The British naval vessel HMS Bulwark offloaded more than 740 early on Saturday at the southeastern Italian port of Taranto. More than 200 migrants arrived at the Calabrian port of Crotone in south-west Italy on board the Belgian navy ship Godetia. Greek Economy Minister: 'Plan B doesn't exist'

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's government is confident of reaching a deal with its creditors this week and is open to pushing back parts of its anti-austerity program to make that happen, the country's interior minister said Saturday. Greece and its EU/IMF creditors have been locked in talks for months on a cash-for-reforms deal and pressure is growing for a deal, since Athens risks default without aid from a bailout program that expires on June 30. "We believe that we can and we must have a solution and a deal within the week," Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis, who is not involved in Greece's talks with the lenders, told Skai television. "Some parts of our program could be pushed back by six months or maybe by a year, so that there is some balance," he said. He did not elaborate on what parts of the ruling Syriza party's anti-austerity program could be pushed back, but the comments suggested a greater willingness to compromise on pre-election pledges. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stormed to power in January on promises to cancel austerity, including restoring the minimum wage level and collective bargaining rights. The government earlier this week said it hoped for a deal by Sunday, though international lenders have been less optimistic, citing Greece's resistance to labor and pension reforms that are conditions for more aid. Voutsis said Athens and its partners agreed on some issues, such as achieving low primary budget surpluses in the first two years. But they still disagreed on a sales tax, with Greece pushing so any VAT hikes will not burden lower incomes. "A powerful majority in the political negotiations has showed respect for the fact that there can't be further austerity strategies for the Greek issue, the Greek problem and the Greek people," he said. The debt stand-off between Greece and its European Union partners overshadowed a meeting of policymakers from the Group of Seven rich nations in Dresden, Germany, on Friday. The United States warned of a possible accident for the world economy if Greece and its creditors miss their June deadlines to avert a debt default. In an interview with Realnews newspaper published on Saturday, Economy Minister George Stathakis said Athens had no alternative plan. "The idea of a Plan B doesn't exist. Our country needs to stay in the eurozone but on a better organized aid program," he said. Stathakis was confident a deal will be reached. "Otherwise, mainly Greece but the European Union as well will step into unchartered waters and no-one wants that."
