Clock Will Be Ticking For Greece's New Government

Greece is holding early parliamentary elections on January 25. A victory for the anti-austerity Syriza party would probably trigger tense negotiations with the country’s official lenders and fresh volatility in Greek government bond markets. But the ...

Greek PM Samaras Visits Peristeri Town Hall, Reasserts Commitment to European Alliances

Elections are “not about which party people want but about what kind of country we and our children want to live in,” Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said on Thursday afternoon at the town hall of Peristeri, northwest of Athens, during a campaign speech. Samaras reiterated there will be no Memorandums or wage and pension cuts in 2015, and that there would be growth under different circumstances “because Greece has exited the problem and we will have this growth after the sacrifice made by the Greek people.” The Premier also stressed the need for collaboration, agreement and alliances among parties. He referred to the ruling coalition – which originally included Democratic Left (DIMAR) besides the current junior member PASOK – and called it an unprecedented alliance forged on a common denominator, their European-friendly policy. “Nobody rules alone,” he noted, reiterating his support of European alliances. During the visit, a man verbally attacked Samaras for contributing, as he said, to the rise of unemployment in the area but calmed down without further incident. (source: ana-mpa)

Less Greek Companies Went Out of Business in 2014 but Also Fewer Established

Both good and bad news for the Greek business world emerged from the official data of the General Commercial Registry (GEMI) for 2014. During the previous year, a positive balance between companies forced to shut down and newly established ones was recorded. In 2014, 33,954 new companies were established, while 30,427 companies went out of business. According to Greek daily newspaper “Kathimerini,” what essentially happened is that market shrinking possibly reached its limits, while at the same time it becomes clear there was a further limitation of sources (bank lending and equity) that could fund even a small business. Compared to the previous years, newly established companies may exceed those forced to shut down, but they are also significantly fewer than those established in 2012 and 2013. Specifically, in 2012 and 2013, 43,541 and 42,790 new companies were established, respectively. Similarly, 34,279 companies went out of business in 2012 and 33,770 in 2013. The balance remained positive over the last three years, although what is worrying enterprises is that the “gap” between startups and going out of business is significantly bridged. In 2014, startups were 11.6% more than the ones that went out of business, while in 2012 and 2013 they exceeded those by 27% and 26.7%, respectively.

‘Norman Atlantic’ Greek Victims’ Bodies to be Repatriated

The Greek victims’ three bodies of the “Norman Atlantic” naval tragedy will be repatriated with a Greek Air Force C-130, according to an announcement emerging from the country’s National Defense Ministry. The flight will depart from the Bari airport within the day and reach Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos,” while the order was given by the Minister, Nikos Dendias, following a cooperation with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ office and the government’s General Secratariat. The transfer expenses will be covered by the Defense Ministry. The three Greek citizens that lost their lives during the fire aboard the ferry have been identified as Gerasimos Kazantzidis, Konstantinos Koufopoulos and Nikolaos Paraschis. At the same time, nine Greek citizens are still considered missing, 18 days later. Italian-flagged passenger ferry “Norman Atlantic,” which belongs to Greek ferry line ANEK, sailing from Patras in western Greece to the Italian port of Ancona, was 33 nautical miles off the small island of Othonoi when it sent a distress signal on December 28. The prosecutor of Bari, who is in charge of the investigation regarding the naval tragedy, will seek the assistance of Greek, German and Turkish authorities in order to identify the corpses found through DNA tests. The ferry is currently docked at the port of Brindisi, although the city’s municipal authorities have declared that they will allow the charred ferry to remain there for two months at the most.

SYRIZA’s Praise Over Avramopoulos’ Intervention Fuels Presidential Nomination Scenarios

Greek main opposition SYRIZA praised earlier today the intervention of European Union Commisioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, regarding the need for extended flexibility of the Stability Pact for the European South countries. At the same time, rumors have started that Avramopoulos will be SYRIZA’s nominee for the Presidential election that will follow the January 25 snap general elections. The leftist party, which is steadily leading the Greek opinion polls, just 10 days ahead of the critical general elections, in a statement noted that Avramopoulos’ intervention was of great significance. In addition, it underlined that the Greek government should have done so “a while ago,” instead of “supporting the harshest terms of austerity that strangle the Greek economy.” Avramopoulos called the European Union to consider a greater flexibility of the Stability Pact for the European South countries, and if this is proved fruitful towards the development of those countries, to keep on with this policy, offering them flexibility as a reward for their efforts. SYRIZA’s statement fueled rumors that the emblematic New Democracy official may be considered as the candidate for the next Presidential ballot. According to this scenario, if Avramopoulos is elected as the next President of the Hellenic Republic, a SYRIZA-led government would have a greater chance of achieving domestic consensus, while it can also appoint its own European Commissioner as a replacement for Avramopoulos. It should be noted that during the previous Presidential election, SYRIZA avoided to nominate a candidate and the only one running for the position was New Democracy’s nominee, Stavros Dimas.

Early elections in Greece: The radical left worries Brussels

Europe’e elites feel threatened by the growing power of the far left, writes Le Monde, according to which the radical Syriza party could win Greece’s early general elections on 25 January. However, the Hellenic republic is far from being the only European country witnessing the rise of “the left of the left” — Several thousand kilometres from Athens, the euro-critical far-left Podemos party in Spain stands a strong chance of winning legislative elections in 2015. […] In Portugal, Cyprus and Ireland, far-left movements are seducing voters who are exhausted by budgetary rigour imposed “from above”, from Brussels, and who are nostalgic for a generous welfare state. The daily explains that these movements from the radical left have modernised by “dropping obsolete themes and focussing on ‘oppression from Europe and the International Monetary Fund’”. The paper recalls that “Socialist prime ministers signed the deals with the troika” in Greece and Portugal, which explains why many voters, feeling betrayed by the moderate left, have turned to more radical parties. However, even if these leaders have “a virulent discourse against Brussels”, they are not opposed to the European Union in itself, but want rather “to transform it.” This pro-European dimension could lead to a loss of influence in favour of “the populist right”, argues Le Monde.
