Aegean Airlines Expands Direct Flight Program Between Nicosia and Greece, Western Europe
Aegean Airlines is stepping in to cover flights to and from Cyprus and link the island with additional cities in Greece and western Europe following the shutdown of Cyprus Airlines, it announced on Tuesday. During a press conference in Nicosia, Aegean Vice Chairman Eftychios Vassilakis said the company would also acquire four new Airbus A320 aircraft as of March 30, and bring total annual capacity in schedules serving connections with Greece and another seven countries to over 1.5 million seats. The number of direct flights to and from Cyprus served by Aegean will increase to fourteen, he said, including destinations both in Greece and western Europe (London/Heathrow, Paris, Munich, Rome and Milan). Aegean’s summer schedule will begin in April 2015, marked by increased regular flights from Nicosia to Athens and the introduction of a direct flight between Athens and Paphos. The new summer schedule also includes direct connections with islands – Heraklion (Crete) and Rhodes – with more islands such as Mykonos and Santorini added in July and August. Eight to nine direct flights to Greek destinations will depart from Nicosia daily. Vassilakis said that Aegean has also applied for permits to inaugurate flights to Israel and the cities of Kiev and Beirut. In addition, frequent-flyer program participants of the former Cyprus Airlines Elite level will be given the option of transferring their miles to Aegean’s Gold level of its Miles + Bonus program. An additional 50% of miles will be offered on all direct routes from and to Cyprus in 2015 to all Miles + Bonus members, and to all new members from Cyprus who join the program by February 28, he said. New Opinion Poll Puts SYRIZA 3.4 Percentage Points Ahead of New Democracy
Greek main opposition SYRIZA has a 3.4 percentage point lead over ruling New Democracy (ND), according to an opinion poll to be published on Thursday’s edition of newspaper “To Pontiki.” 31.2% of the survey participants said they intend to vote for SYRIZA and 27.8% for ND. In a previous poll, SYRIZA had 31.2% again and ND 28%. Third place was “To Potami” with 5.1%, followed by far-right Golden Dawn (GD) with 5%, the Greek Communist Party (KKE) with 4%, PASOK with 3.6%, Independent Greeks (ANEL) with 2.6% and Democrat Socialists Movement (KIDISO) with 2.4%. “Other party” was selected by 4.1% of those taking the survey, while 1.5% said they would cast a blank ballot, 2.4% said they would abstain and 10.3% were undecided. Extrapolating the percentages by discounting invalid votes and abstention, SYRIZA receives 32.4% of the vote, ND 28.9%, “To Potami” 5.3%, GD 5.2%, KKE 4.2%, PASOK 3.7%, ANEL 2.7% and KIDISO 2.5%. A further 4.3% of the vote goes to “other party” and the percentage of undecided voters rises to 10.6%. The survey was conducted nationwide from January 11-13. (source: ana-mpa)

Crazy Image Shows What The Largest Volcano In The Solar System Would Look Like On Earth
Mt. Everest might be the tallest mountain on Earth, but it's nothing compared to the tallest volcanic mountain in the solar system, Olympus Mons on our red cousin Mars. John Brady at Astronomy Central shows, in the image below, what this gargantuan feature would look like if it were on the continent of North America — it would completely cover the state of Arizona! Named for Mt. Olympus — the highest mountain in Greece — Olympus Mons towers 16 miles above the Martian surface — three times taller than Mt. Everest. This mountain is also the largest volcano in the solar system with a caldera at its summit that is 53 miles across. Here's what that looks like compared to Everest: The caldera is easily visible as the small, central circle in the NASA picture below of Olympus Mons, the zit-looking mound in the upper center, which Brady used for his comparison image. With a diameter of 375 miles, Olympus Mons is part of the largest volcanic region on Mars called the Tharsis Montes. The region spans 2,500 miles across the surface of Mars and contains 12 large volcanoes that are up to 100 times larger than any volcanoes on Earth. Like the volcanoes that formed the Hawaiian islands, Olympus Mons is a shield volcano, which is named after its shape, which resembles a warrior's shield. Shield volcanoes erupt lava that flows more easily than lava from some other eruptions, which means the lava travels a further distance before cooling and hardening giving shield volcanoes their distinctive shape, which you can clearly see in the NASA image below: Eruptions, which could last for hundreds of years at a time, and subsequent lava flows built a ridge up around the central peak of Olympus Mons, shown in the computer-generated view below. This ridge is estimated to be 6 miles high — higher than the tallest point on Mt. Everest, which is 5.5 miles above sea level. Scientists estimate that the last time Olympus Mons erupted lava onto the Martian surface was between 20 and 200 million years ago — around the same time that dinosaurs roamed the Earth While some scientists think that this last eruption on Olympus Mons marks the last breath of volcanic activity on Mars, others suggest this monstrous volcano is still active despite being dormant for millions of years. A scary thought when you consider the volcano's colossal size. Olympus Mons is the largest planetary mountain in the solar system, but there's a mountain on the asteroid, Vesta, that is the largest mountain around. Called Rheasilvia, the mountain is a mere 315 feet higher than Olympus Mons.CHECK OUT: Insane GoPro Video Shows Man Rappelling Into Volcano SEE ALSO: Crazy Image Shows What One Of Jupiter's Moons Looks Like Compared To Earth Join the conversation about this story »

Regling: Discussion on Greek Debt Relief Possible Only if Reforms Continue
In an interview with Portuguese newspaper “Diario Economico,” European Stability Mechanism (ESM) Managing Director Klaus Regling left the possibility open that a discussion on further debt relief for Greece might begin, provided the country continued the reforms and measures agreed with the Troika. Asked about the possibility of a Grexit, Regling noted that the country had traversed a great distance since the start of the crisis in 2009, starting from a very difficult economic and political position, and said he was confident that the country will remain in the euro. He pointed out that the percentage of Greeks that wanted the country to stay in the Eurozone had increased from 70 to 80% in recent weeks. He also noted that the Eurozone had no “exit mechanism” for a member-state and that all rumors about Greece leaving the euro originated from the press and not government statements. The ESM chief underlined that Eurozone governments had not changed their stance and wanted all countries to remain in the euro area. At the same time, however, they wanted the countries that received financial support to improve their economic situation through reforms and fiscal adjustment where necessary, and that this was also the case for Greece. Despite making great progress, Greece “is not at the end of the process,” Regling said, adding that it was in Greece’s interests to complete this process and regain a good growth rate, which the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has predicted could be the highest in the Euro area if reforms continue. He noted that significant steps to relieve the country’s debt burden have already been taken through extension of loan maturities and low interest rates that helped make Greece’s debt sustainable. “I don’t believe that much needs to be done, beyond this. A lot has already been done but I am certain that, if reforms continue, the Eurogroup will re-examine this,” he said. Stressing that the Troika and Eurozone governments will talk with any government resulting from the Greek elections, he also made it clear that no more loans could be disbursed by the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) or the International Monetary Fund (IMF) if the agreed reforms do not continue. “There will be no discussion on additional debt relief, the whole process will have to be stopped and the Greek economy would suffer,” he said. 1/3 of Greek Households Earn Less than 10,000 Euros
According to a survey conducted by Small Enterprises’ Institute of the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen and Merchants (IME-GSEVEE), almost one in three Greeks are facing poverty and debt, while the disposable income has slipped below the poverty line. The survey data show that Greek households are facing difficulties in meeting their daily obligations. Meanwhile, the absence of legislation regarding home foreclosures, along with the property tax increase, have fueled a new wave of insecurity. Three out of ten Greek households are forced to live with the lowest annual family income, which is less that 10,000 euros. The rates are even higher in households with two and four members. A total of 46.9% of the Greek population stated that the family income is insufficient, not meeting their everyday needs, and 55% said they needed additional help, such as loans from relatives, asset sales or bank loans. Furthermore, 35.9% of households in Greece (more than 1 million) have at least one unemployed member. However, only 8.9% of these people receive unemployment benefits. The survey also found that 52% consider pensions as their main source of income. The fact that Greek households have increased their private expenditure on health care, due to increased private participation and reduced public expenditure on health, is also worrying. Finally, it was estimated that over 54% of households were asked to pay more than 500 euros for property tax in 2014. The corresponding figure in 2013 was 46.8%. Three out of ten families in Greece have expressed their fear of losing their home due to the overwhelming financial responsibilities and additional taxes.

Greek Education Ministry to Withdraw School Book With Failed Parthenon Marbles Reference
Greece’s Education Ministry will withdraw an art history school book that was criticized for misrepresenting the history of the Parthenon Marbles housed in the British Museum. The textbook, published in 2003, says that the Parthenon treasures, almost half of the 160-meter-long frieze on the Parthenon, were “transported” to Britain without any explanation on how that happened. Education Minister Andreas Loverdos said the book will no longer be used in schools next year and sent instructions to schools nationwide on how teachers should present the subject of the Parthenon Marbles correctly. The Parthenon sculptures were removed from Acropolis in 1801 by Scottish nobleman Thomas Bruce, the 7th Earl of Elgin, Great Britain’s ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Bruce later sold them to the British government and the phrase “Elgin Marbles” has been coined throughout the years. The sculptures are exhibited in the British Museum since. The British Museum refuses to return the priceless sculptures to Greece on the grounds they were acquired by Elgin through a legitimate contract with the Ottoman Empire that was ruling Greece at the time. For the past 35 years, Greek governments are on an ongoing campaign to return the Parthenon sculptures to their natural “home” and reunite with the rest of the Parthenon Marbles that are now exhibited at the Acropolis Museum. Controversy over the book arose following a recent complaint by SYRIZA MP Tasos Kourakis. “It is unthinkable that students are being taught that the Parthenon Marbles were ‘transported’. They were violently extracted from the monument,” Kourakis said.

Greek FinMin: Greek Govt Surplus Falls Short
The Greek government’s projections regarding the budget surplus for 2014 fell far short, the country’s Finance Ministry announced earlier today, citing lower tax revenue and a stalled bailout review that prevented the disbursement of funds, according to Reuters. As the report highlighted, the central government surplus excludes the budget of social security organizations and local administrations, and is different from the figure monitored by Greece’s lenders, although it indicates that the country has made significant progress in repairing its finances. The surplus came in at 1.92 billion euros, almost 3 billion euros less than the 4.9-billion-euro projection in the country’s latest budget. As for today, Athens has yet to receive a 1.9-billion installment from the European Central Bank (ECB) due last year on the completion of its bailout review, which was apparently left unfinished because of the unsuccessful Presidential ballot that triggered snap general elections. In addition, the ECB was due to return profits made from buying Greek government bonds. According to the Reuters, tax revenue came in at 46.62 billion euros, falling short of the government’s projection by 3.53 billion euros, while the government failed to elaborate on why revenue fell and Greek media report that Greeks have begun delaying tax payments after Prime Minister Antonis Samaras called a Presidential vote ahead of schedule, as it was considered certain that such a development would lead to snap elections.
