Greek economy to bounce back from years of recession

The crisis-hit Greek economy will end six years of recession in 2014, the European Commission said on Tuesday with sky high unemployment finally falling slightly. Its rate is only matched that year by Ireland, another bailed ...

Mr. Tsipras and His Unbearable Lust for Elections

There is something about Greeks and elections. Many Greeks show an unexplainable lust for elections; if we had elections every six months, they would be happy. Apparently they love the atmosphere, the gatherings, the polls, the banners, the placards, the rallies, the speeches, the slogans, the chants, the noise, streets full leaflets, walls full of pictures, of smiling crooks who promise they care for us, the moment they cast the ballot, the celebrations after the win, or the justified bile after the loss. One might say that this lust for elections is the residue of the seven-year dictatorship. But the Spanish had 40 years of military rule and now they’re ok with elections every four years. Not to mention that most of those who have a fetish for elections were not even conceived between 1967 and 1974. In reality, this lust for elections is nothing more than the illusion of something better. The illusion that “our guys will do a better job than the other guys.” This is why politicians in Greece act like illusionists: You see the debt? Now it’s gone! You see the memorandum? Now you don’t! You see this empty hat? Now 300 billion euros will come out of it! You see the Turks in northern Cyprus? Now they will disappear! But only if you vote for us. I believe that for many voters, elections is an escape, something that keeps us away from harsh reality for a few weeks. “Let’s have elections now and see what happens.” Or, let’s have our elections fiesta now, have our fun, and who cares what happens next. Disregarding the cost. After all, who can put a price on hope? SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras visited President of the Republic Carolos Papoulias yesterday and asked him to call a meeting of party leaders to decide on a date for snap general elections and agree on a new presidential candidate that can be approved by MPs after the early polls. Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras also met with Papoulias and stated that there will be no early elections and that the president of the republic will be elected by MPs when Papoulias’ term ends in March. The president of the republic advised both leaders to show a “minimum consensus” on the difficult economic, political and international issues Greece is facing right now. Unfortunately, the word “consensus” does not belong in the Greek political dialogue. And especially between two politicians who show such a lust for power. Samaras will do anything to keep his chair, Tsipras will do anything to sit on it. The problems of the country can wait. Who cares if schools and universities are occupied, people are in danger of losing their homes on account of state bureaucracy, Greeks get the lowest wages in Europe, yet they pay the highest prices for staples. And more importantly, who cares if the Turkish navy corvette Buyukada cruises leisurely around Kea and Kythnos, only 100 miles from the port of Piraeus. The two men didn’t even bother about that. They kept their petty arguments about elections. The argument the coalition premier is using is that Greece cannot go to elections now because the government has made giant steps towards the bailout and should keep on the path for growth. Tsipras, on the other hand, says that the government should quit now, before they sign another binding memorandum with our lenders. He also claims that a SYRIZA government will negotiate better (!) with our international creditors and that it will have a powerful popular mandate. It should be noted here that SYRIZA MPs never touch the subject of the continuous Turkish provocations because issues of national defense don’t sell to their voters. However, opinion polls show that both party leaders are not in the advantageous position they think they are. New Democracy gets a 21 percent on intention to vote and SYRIZA 26 percent. Greek people have suffered — and continue to suffer — from the austerity measures the ND and PASOK coalition have imposed on them. And Samaras is 28 votes short of electing a president from the current parliament. At the same time, figures hardly justify the “popular mandate” SYRIZA members claim they have in their hands. Only one fourth of Greek people would vote for the leftist party. And the May municipal and European parliament elections brought the opposition leftist party 150,000 votes short compared to the 2012 elections. The political disaffection of Greeks does not necessarily translate to votes for SYRIZA. Also, polls show great mistrust for both parties. Regarding the ability to bring Greece out of the memorandum, 64 percent say that Samaras is incapable of bringing us out of the memorandum and 69 percent believe that Tsipras cannot bring Greece out of the memorandum. At the same time, 51.6 percent of Greeks don’t want premature elections and 39.8 percent believe that we should go to the ballot boxes now. Also, 54.8 percent of Greeks believe that snap elections will stall the country’s exit from the economic crisis, 54.2 percent think that Greece is in better shape now than it was a year ago, and 42.9 percent believe that the situation in Greece will be better a year from now. Another paradox of the Greek voter is that even though they give the lead to SYRIZA, they believe that Samaras is more suitable for prime minister. Yes, 39.9 percent would prefer to see Samaras in the Maximos Mansion and 33.2 would like to see Tsipras there. The fact that two thirds of the Greek population don’t want to see either one of them in there doesn’t seem to discourage the two power-hungry politicians. Finally, 33.6 percent of potential voters trust that New Democracy will bring Greece out of the economic crisis, while only 26.4 percent of Greeks trust SYRIZA to achieve that. So, one would predict that if we had elections next month, SYRIZA would throw a great pre-elections fiesta, party members and voters would have their fun for a few weeks, 50 million euros from the state budget would be wasted, and after the ballots were counted, there wouldn’t be enough to form an autonomous government. I have the feeling that SYRIZA would fight for another election after that.

EU Commission President Juncker: We Didn’t Accept Greece in the Eurozone Prematurely

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, surprised the audience during a recent presentation of former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s new book, entitled “Aus Sorge Um Europa,” in Frankfurt, when he defended Greece’s accession to the Eurozone back in 2001. In the book, Mr. Kohl claims that his successor, Gerhard Schroeder, prematurely accepted Greece in the Eurozone. According to Deutche Welle, the President of the European Commission said, “we did not allow Greece to be among the first group of countries that would adopt the euro, because it was not ready for that. However, later, Greeks made significant efforts.” Despite that, he acknowledged that the European partners “were misled by false statistical data,” but underlined that there is no chance such a mistake will occur again. Addressing an audience of about 100 journalists Mr. Juncker recognized the achievements and sacrifices of the Greek people during the last four years of the crisis, however, he declared that we should not seek scapegoats for the Greek politicians’ mistakes in the past decades. Characterizing the introduction to the Eurozone as a “policy of peace,” the EU Commission President said he was disappointed over the revival of the resentment cliches about European citizens both in Germany (towards Greeks) and Greece (towards Germans). Furthermore, he underlined that the Euro “made the European integration non reversible, as it protects Europe and without it things would be bad.” In his newly published book, Helmut Kohl heavily criticizes his successor Gerhard Schroeder for his choices, amongst which was the “premature introduction of Greece to the Eurozone,” at a time when the country was not ready for it. The former Chancellor underlines that Greece must be supported by its European partners, while according to him, faith in fairness and stability are necessary in order to restore hope in the Euro.

Tourism Minister Kefalogianni: Greece Amongst Top 15 Destinations

Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, after the opening of the Greek pavilion at the international tourism exhibition “World Travel Market 2014,” expressed her belief that tourism arrivals in Greece will increase further in 2015 and that the country will successfully claim its position amongst the 15 top tourist destinations in the world. The exhibition premiered in London yesterday and will conclude on Thursday, November 6. As Mrs. Kefalogianni underlined while addressing journalists and professionals from the tourism industry, “during the last two years, Greece has seen a great increase in tourism. For 2015, initial data shows the market will increase further and Greece will solidify its position among the 15 top tourist destinations in the world.” In addition, the Greek Minister stressed that tourism is not only about sun and sea, but it is a “varied product with themed sections which are developing and aim to cover all the interests of the modern and selective visitor.” At the same time Mrs. Kefalogianni set the targets for the upcoming season, and among them are: modernization of the infrastructure, the increase in the amount of money spent by each tourist, the promotion of sustainable growth, the promotion of new “unexplored” destinations around the country, the improvement of the working conditions, the further support of business activity and the diffusion of the tourism surplus to local communities as well as other sectors of the Greek economy. “We are trying to promote destinations which are less known abroad, like unknown islands, mainland Greece, mountainous areas and mainly to show the country is not just a destination for sun and sea, but a destination throughout the year,” Mrs Kefalogianni stated, concluding that everyone is welcome to Greece, regardless of age, sex, education and wealth level. This year’s communication campaign is focused on the idea that all the Greek Gods and heroes offer the guests a tour around the country, explaining its fascinating history. Reuters for Tsipras: From Firebrand to PM-in-Waiting

Greece’s main opposition SYRIZA leader, Alexis Tsipras, was profiled by Reuters in an article published today entitled “From firebrand to PM-in-waiting, Greek leftist smells power.” According to this, the 40-year-old politician has recently softened his confrontational tone with Greece’s international lenders, and has drafted an agenda for the first 100 days of a future government, which as polls show will be formed by his party. “SYRIZA, once a fringe far-left movement, is now the most popular party in Greece, representing the many voters who feel punished by the country’s EU/ IMF bailout. In May, the party easily won European elections and gained the governor’s seat for Greece’s most populous region. Today, it polls higher than any other party, leading by a margin of between 4 and 11 points over Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’s conservatives. One poll shows Tsipras as the most popular political leader in the country,” Reuters explains. While SYRIZA still opposes the radical austerity measures and is talking about a “humanitarian crisis,” it no longer threatens to tear up the agreement but is willing to negotiate instead, stating it supports the Euro. “SYRIZA’s transformation mirrors the political progression of other anti-establishment fringe parties, such as the Northern League in Italy, that changed tactics after gaining parliamentary power and became more mainstream political forces. It also reflects how Greece has turned a page on the dark days of the eurozone crisis four years ago, when Athens’ profligate spending risked bringing down the entire euro project. Then, a Tsipras victory at the polls was widely seen as a trigger for a bank run and Greece’s exit from the euro,” the report stresses. Regarding its leader’s transformation from the Euro’s “troublemaker” to a leader that is willing to table the issues concerning the Greek economy with European partners, Reuters concludes that today’s Alexis Tsipras, “is not the one of 2010. Since the last election SYRIZA’s rhetoric has calmed down. Tsipras is preparing for the fact that he might be leading a government so he needs to prove that he is approachable and flexible.”

Quotes from voters in this week's Associated Press Global Football 10

by  Associated Press Quotes from voters in the AP Global Football 10 Associated Press - 4 November 2014 11:45-05:00 LONDON (AP) — Quotes from voters in this week's Associated Press Global Football 10: ___ Aurelio Capaldi, RAI Sport, Italy "Carlo Ancelotti is probably living the best time of his coaching career: 11 wins in a row is an amazing result and the way he's making things work after Real Madrid sold Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso is impressive. This also explains why James Rodriguez, who is scoring fabulous goals, already fits well in the team." ___ Marco Monteverde, News Corp. Australia "The Spanish giant Madrid continues to score freely in all competitions and have an attacking arsenal that most clubs can only dream about." ___ Chris Tait, The Herald, Scotland "Jose Mourinho has complained that home supporters are too quiet inside Stamford Bridge. Yet Chelsea fans can surely be forgiven for assuming a hushed reverence following Oscar's goal against (Queens Park Rangers), a swerving effort dispatched deftly with the outside of his boot." ___ Cedric Rouquette, CReaFeed agency, France "Manchester City was the winner of the big game of the weekend in England. Even if its last third of the game was not that consistent, it's the mark that Manuel Pellegrini's team is still in the race (for the Premier League)." ___ Leonardo Bertozzi, ESPN, Brazil "Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal will be one of the best signings of the European season. No other player had scored seven goals in the first nine games of the Premier League under the command of Arsene Wenger." ___ Tito Puccetti, ESPN, Argentina "Celta Vigo is the story. It won again against Barcelona, something it has not managed to do since the 1941-42 season." ___ Soren-Mikael Hansen, Politiken, Denmark "Sergio Alvarez was the decisive factor in what will stand as one of the season's greatest upsets. The posts did also help Celta on the way to the first victory at Camp Nou for more than 70 years, but without magnificent saves from the goalkeeper it wouldn't have been possible." ___ Tom Timmermann, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, United States "Cristiano Ronaldo is supposed to score, not assist, so when he helps set up two goals, that's a good day. Koke had a role in three goals for Atletico Madrid and even though Oscar scored just one goal, it was such a great goal that that alone demands recognition." ___ Manos Staramopoulos, Democratia, Greece "Yacine Brahimi is small and dainty and a small devil in the stadium. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder of FC Porto was the great protagonist once again. He scored a stunning goal." DIMAR Leader Kouvelis Meets President Papoulias

President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias received Democratic Left (DIMAR) leader Fotis Kouvelis earlier today, for the last of a series of meetings he held with political leaders that began yesterday with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras. Mr. Kouvelis requested from the President, the call for a political leaders’ meeting regarding the restructuring of the country’s debt. In addition, he underlined the significance of political understanding amongst the parties noting that the contradictions and the confrontations between them are acceptable in the context of the democratic operation. However, the political powers should leave aside their disagreements and find common political ground on the debt negotiations, otherwise the risk for adverse results on citizens is high, DIMAR leader added. President Papoulias said he was glad to hear about mutual understanding despite the differences between the political parties, noting however, that this understanding is also necessary for national issues. “This is my position, this is what I told Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Main Opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras as well,” he concluded. Yesterday, Mr. Papoulias had consecutive meetings with Mr. Samaras and Mr. Tsipras and stressed to both leaders that a “minimum consensus of political forces” is necessary in order for Greece to overcome its political problems both in internal and international levels. Despite the official statements, though, Mr. Tsipras appeared firm on his demand for early general elections, while Mr. Samaras denied this scenario. “I had the opportunity to repeat that there will be no early elections. I am deeply convinced that Greece’s parliamentary deputies, will consider responsibly and elect a president of the Republic in February. We have covered too much ground to now throw everything up into the air,” Mr. Samaras stated yesterday while exiting the Presidential Mansion.
