U. Oregon Report Suggests Limiting Greek System To Prevent Sexual Violence On Campus
A new report released this week from the University of Oregon found that the school's sexual assault problem may be due to the nature of its Greek system. According to the report, an increasing number of UO students are joining fraternities and sororities, with more houses currently planned to arrive on campus. One recommendation from the sexual assault task force that compiled this report is to halt this growth, calling the expansion "irresponsible." "We cannot ignore the fact that, despite the relatively small number of students directly involved in their activities, Athletics and Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) play disproportionately powerful roles in facilitating or tolerating conditions in which sexual violence occurs on campus," the report states. A campus-wide sexual assault survey released earlier this month found that male OU Greeks were 3.5 times and female OU Greeks were nearly two times more likely than non-Greeks to have experienced some form of non-consensual sexual contact. Put another way, as student newspaper The Daily Emerald writes, "48.1% of females and 23.6% of males in Fraternity and Sorority Life have experienced non-consensual sexual contact. Females not in FSL reported 33.1%, and male 7.9%." Additionally, according to the survey, Greek women "were 3.4 times more likely than their non-Greek counterparts to have experienced an attempted or completed rape." The report quotes a recent interview with Oklahoma State University professor John Foubert — a college sexual assault researcher — who says about his research: Before they got to college, fraternity men were no different from other male students. They committed the same number of incidents of sexual assaults before college. But here's the difference. Guys who joined a fraternity then committed three times as many sexual assaults as those who didn't join. It is reasonable to conclude that fraternities turn men into guys more likely to rape. It remains to be seen what decisions the UO administration will make about the future of the university's Greek system. General Strike from Greek Labor Unions on November 27
Today, Greece’s major labor unions have announced a 24-hour general strike for November 27 in order to protest against planned layoffs and pension reforms demanded by the country’s international lenders. This will be the first general strike in the country after a period of seven months and it is expected to coincide with a visit by European Union (EU) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) inspectors. The nationwide strike is organized by private sector employees union GSEE and public sector employees union ADEDY. It is noted that major protests and strikes have declined dramatically in recent months, while the two unions held their last strike in April. According to analysts, frustration and anger over the imposed austerity measures is replaced by an enigmatic mood of despondency and resignation. Despite what government officials stress, “there is no light at the end of the tunnel for workers and the unemployed,” GSEE General Secretary Nikos Kioutsoukis told Reuters. “We are sending a message to the government, the EU and the IMF: Greek people cannot take it anymore.” About a quarter of the Greek economy has been wiped out during the last six years of recession, marked by severe wage and pension cuts, while unemployment rate remains high, exceeding 26%. Youth unemployment rate is over 50%.

World's Most Gay-Friendly Travel Destinations, As Ranked By Lonely Planet
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) travelers will have an extra special reason to pack their bags for Copenhagen in 2015, as the Danish capital tops Lonely Planet's list of the world's most gay-friendly destinations. Copenhagen edged out New Zealand, Toronto and Palm Springs for the top spot, which was released as part of Lonely Planet's "Best in Travel 2015" series. The gay-friendly list, like the rest of the series, was compiled "based on topicality, unique experiences and that 'wow' factor," according to Lonely Planet's Chris Zeiher, who created the list. "I also considered if the destination demonstrated inclusiveness & tolerant behavior toward our community, has progressive equal rights laws and, finally, how safe the selection is for the LGBTIQ traveler," Zeiher told The Huffington Post in an email. The list, he added, is both "consciously diverse and, in some cases, a little unexpected," with less obvious destinations like Reykjavik, Iceland and Skiathos, Greece included. Take a look at Lonely Planet's list of the 10 most gay-friendly places on the planet. Meanwhile, check out the rest of their "Best in Travel 2015" series here.
