Pope visiting Brazil's shrine to 'black Mary'
Standing atop a crescent moon adorned with an angel, Aparecida lifts her hands to her chest in prayer, a slight smile on her upturned lips and several flowers in her hair.
The diminutive statue stands just 39 centimeters tall (15 inches tall), though the gold crown and blue velvet cape she now wears give her a bit of added height and bulk.
Reverence for the figure of the Virgin Mary, known as Marian devotion, is common in much of the Christian world, popular in the Greek and Russian Orthodox churches as well as in Catholic southern Europe, where major shrines such as Lourdes in France and Fatima in Portugal are dedicated to the Virgin.
According to church lore, the Virgin of Aparecida surfaced on Oct. 16, 1717, as the town of Guaratingueta, an inland hamlet about halfway between the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, prepared for a visit by Sao Paulo state's governor.
A fleet of fishermen plied the nearby Paraiba River to catch fish for a banquet in the official's honor, but after 12 fruitless hours in the normally well-stocked river, all but three of the fishermen gave up.
[...] many have made offerings to the saint there's a room in the sprawling church where the gifts of famous devotees are on display, with a helmet once belonging to the late Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna next to a soccer ball from celebrated striker Ronaldo.
David Gibson, a New York-based reporter for Religion News Service, called Marian devotion the church's "connective tissue," which "binds people together."
The clay used to make the statue has been traced to a pit in Sao Paulo state, and it's thought she might be the work of a Benedictine monk and sculptor who lived nearby.
Briton killed in Crete resort after row with other holidaymakers
Police arrest 17 people after man, identified as 19-year-old from London, died "within minutes" of being stabbed in heart in Malia
A British tourist, celebrating his 19th birthday in Crete, was fatally stabbed on Tuesday following an apparent dispute with other holidaymakers.
Party-goers in the resort of Malia looked on horrified as the teenager collapsed in a pool of blood in the first such incident since the tourist season began.
"There was a row, and then a fight, outside a bar in Malia," said Superintendent Constantinos Boukakisspeaking from Crete. "A lot of people were involved and a lot of alcohol was consumed. Already, there have been 17 arrests including the man who has been singled out as wielding the knife."
The victim, identified as Tyrell Matthews-Burton from London, died "within minutes" of being stabbed in the heart, despite efforts by paramedics to revive him.
"He was stabbed once in the back and once in the chest," Manolis Michalodimitrakis, Crete's coroner, said. "He was clearly pinned down and killed execution style, there were no defence wounds only a few bruises to the lower lip where he had obviously been punched."
The coroner, who examined the body at Crete's main hospital in the capital, Heraklion, said the Briton would have died almost instantly. "The knife punctured his lung and heart. There was massive and abrupt bleeding on the left side of his chest and he lost almost half of his blood."
The body is expected to be repatriated this week. On Tuesday night, flowers were spotted outside his parents' home in Forest Gate, north-east London.
Malia, with its bars, discos and clubs, is popular among young Britons.
Like Laganas, Europe's self-styled party capital on the Ionian island of Zakynthos, the Crete resort has developed an unwelcome reputation in recent years, with marathon pub crawls, often organised by holiday reps acting on commission.
"Every day we hand out pamphlets explaining the risks of such behaviour," said Zacharias Doxastakis, Malia's mayor. "We really want to improve the quality of tourism and we've shut down bars and businesses that don't obey certain rules.
"Our country is in crisis and we love all holidaymakers, especially the young. But there is a limit and they have to know that self-respect, and respecting the society that is hosting them, is one of them."
Shortly after he assumed the post two years ago, Doxastakis said officers from Scotland Yard also visited the town to advise local police as part of a wide-reaching Foreign Office campaign to rein in "bad behaviour" by Britons on holiday.
A visit to the resort was one of the first priorities of the new British ambassador to Greece, John Kittmer.
"Local authorities are working very closely with the British embassy," said the mayor. "Until today's unfortunate incident, the campaign had been very successful. Incidents of rape and violence have gone down. Malia had been quiet."
On Tuesday night, police said 12 other Britons were still being sought.
Those already detained, including the main suspect, also British, are expected to be brought before a public prosecutor on Wednesday.
A "sports disagreement" is believed to have triggered the row although investigators refused, officially, to divulge the cause of the fight.
Adulterated alcohol has also contributed to the ill-repute of resorts in Greece following revelations that bars frequently mix cocktails with pure spirit in a bid to make servings go further.
"The smell of alcohol was so strong it pervaded the room," said Manolis Michalodimitrakis, the coroner. "Nationals from every country visit Crete but in Malia it is always Britons who drink and become so aggressive. It is very sad."

FYROM must implement political agreement EU says
by
Enlargement Commissioner Stepha Fule said today that the Former Yuroslav Republic of Macedonia must implement a political agreement he brokered in March between the ruling party and opposition and highlighted the importance of improving freedom of expression if the country wants to stay on a course to accede to the bloc.
It is important that "outstanding political issues be addressed, in order to create a positive climate later this year when the Member States will next make decisions about the enlargement process," Fule said following a meeting on FYROM's EU membership bid held today in Brussels.
Fule's concerns regard an incident that took place on December 24 during which the opposition and the press were ejected from the parliament and then the government went ahead to push through a contriversial budget with just over half of FYROM's MPs in the chamber.
Following the incident the main opposition party, the Social Democrats (SDSM), boycotted parliament and demanded that the government call early national elections. The government rejected that call, prompting the SDSM to threaten to boycott local elections scheduled for 24 March.
The crisis was resolved with the intervention of Fule and two MEPs, Richard Howitt and Jerzy Buzek, a centre-left British MEP and a centre-right Polish one.
The agreement stipulated that after the local elections that were held on March 24, with candidates from the opposition eventually taking part, there would be talks that could lead to early national elections, that an independent commission would investigate what led to the parliamentary showdown on 24 December and that the inquiry would include a review of he parliament's security system and rules of procedure. The launch of a formal dialogue with the media was also be launched was also agreed to.
But Fule said that he regretted hearing that the head of the in depended commission has resigned and added that implementing the deal fully is essential. He also repeated that freedom of expression, in particular in the media, is a priority area for the EU.
FYROM has been a candidate for membership since 2005, but Greece has blocked the start of formal accession talks. The two countries are involved in a dispute over the aspiring member's name. FYROM has styled itself as Macedonia which Greece says is unacceptable. But FYROM also has a troubled relationship with Bulgaria, another neighbour and EU member.
The EU's Council of Ministers today noted in a statement issued after the meeting that "steps have been taken in bilateral relations with Bulgaria and Greece, as well as on the name issue."
